An Open House Above a Reef

Auberge built Chileno Bay to be barely a building. The resort runs down a low slope to the sand in pale stacked volumes with walls that open, so the line between a room, a terrace and the beach path stays mostly notional; you can pass a week here without ever quite going indoors. What it sits above matters more. Chileno Bay is a protected cove roughly halfway along the Los Cabos corridor, one of the few stretches of this coast with a swimming beach and a living reef within wading distance of the towels. Ninety two rooms, suites and villas, and a shoreline that does the entertaining.

Why It Works

Two things settled it. The first is the cove: sheltered, calm, with coral close enough in that snorkelling happens before breakfast rather than by boat. Turtles are regulars. The second is that Auberge has resisted the urge to turn this into a compound. The plan stays loose, the service is attentive without being theatrical, and the three restaurants differ enough from one another that a week does not fold into a single menu. Forbes rates it five star and Michelin has awarded it two keys, which describes how the place is run rather than how it sells itself.

Why This Location

The address is Carretera Transpeninsular km 15, on the Sea of Cortez side, about fifteen kilometres from downtown Cabo San Lucas and a similar run the other way to San Jose del Cabo. That is the sweet spot of the corridor: you can take the marina and the noise of Cabo for one evening and the colonial grid and galleries of San Jose the next, and sleep away from both. Los Cabos International Airport is the standard transfer, straightforward along the same highway. Playa Chileno itself is a public beach with its own car park, which brings day trippers at weekends and leaves the early mornings to the resort.

Rooms, Suites and the Villa Question

The inventory runs from guestrooms through suites to villas and sky villas, and the jump between those categories is larger here than at most resorts. A suite gives you the terrace and the view; a villa gives you a plot, a private pool and a kitchen, which for two families travelling together changes both the economics and the rhythm of the week. The largest, Brisa del Mar, takes six bedrooms on the oceanfront. Whatever the category, the architecture does the same thing: sliding walls, deep shade, pale stone, and a sightline that finishes at the water.

Where Dinner Changes Accent Each Night

COMAL is the flagship, an elevated reading of Mexican cooking that takes the region seriously. YAYA leans Mediterranean, lighter, better suited to the middle of a hot week. JANG covers Asian. Three registers is the right number for a stay of four or five nights, and it is the reason nobody here feels obliged to drive into town for dinner. Sol, the spa, sits on the wellness side, working the herbal traditions of Baja alongside the usual treatment menu.

Snorkelling, Turtles and the Shape of the Day

Mornings belong to the water. The reef sits close to shore and holds tropical fish and sea turtles, which makes this one of the few addresses on the corridor where a snorkel gets used from the beach instead of packed for an excursion. Afternoons drift to the pools, including the bungalow pools that give a family a little enclosure of its own. Check in runs from 15:00 and check out to midday.
