Walking Distance Is the Whole Idea Here

Most of Los Cabos is designed around a car. Bahia is not. The hotel stands on Avenida El Pescador, one street back from Medano Beach, in the district it calls the most walkable in Los Cabos, where the marina, the restaurants and a swimmable shoreline all sit inside a short walk. It is an urban boutique rather than a resort: 89 rooms and suites arranged around a courtyard pool, finished in hand cut tile, organic wood and regional craft, with private terraces throughout. The scale is the point. You are in the middle of things without being inside a compound.

Why It Works

We kept it for two reasons. The first is Bar Esquina, which is a restaurant with a following of its own rather than a hotel dining room: wood fired cooking, live music most nights, and a wine list that has collected awards. A hotel whose bar draws people who are not staying there is a hotel with a pulse. The second is the geography. Steps to the swimmable part of Medano, a few minutes to the marina and the boats, and a courtyard pool to retreat to when the sand fills up. For a first visit to Cabo, it is a practical base.

Why This Location

Avenida El Pescador, in the Medano Beach district. Medano is the sheltered arc of sand east of the marina, the one stretch in town where the water lies calm enough to swim, lined with palapa bars and running towards the headland at Land’s End. The marina is a short walk west, and with it the panga boats out to El Arco and Lovers Beach. Downtown, the Golden Zone restaurants and the shopping fall within the same radius. Los Cabos International Airport is the standard transfer along the corridor.

Eighty Nine Rooms, and the Tile They Are Made Of

The rooms are why the word boutique applies. Eighty nine of them, laid out openly, each with a private terrace, and finished in materials that come from the region rather than from a procurement catalogue: hand cut tile, organic woods, locally made details. Suites add space rather than gimmicks. Nothing is enormous, which keeps the building at the scale of the street it stands on, and the courtyard arrangement makes the pool the social centre instead of a sun deck bolted to one side.

Bar Esquina After Dark

Bar Esquina is the address within the address. The kitchen works wood fire, the wine list has been recognised well beyond Baja, and there is live music most evenings, which pulls in a local crowd alongside guests. SUR Beach House handles the other register, feet in the sand, seafood, the Sea of Cortes in front. Between the two you get a lunch and a dinner that do not resemble each other, and a coffee and juice bar for the morning after.

How the Days Divide Between Sand and Street

Mornings are for Medano, quiet early and busy by midday. Afternoons work better in the courtyard, or in the sauna and cold plunge when the heat has won. Evenings belong to the walk: the marina, the Golden Zone, and back without a taxi. The hotel also runs guided tequila tastings and water excursions if you would rather have the day arranged. The property takes weddings and full buyouts, so check the calendar if you want it quiet.
